Birding With Alpine Bird Tour Japan

4th - 8th August 2016

Led by the well know bird guide from Japan, Ken Tanaka, luck seems to be on the side of this particular group while birding at Mt. Kinabalu. We saw the commonly heard Crimson-headed and Red-breasted Partridge on the Power Station Road and a pair of Whitehead's Trogon. Their favourite bird of the trip was the Black & Yellow Broadbill at Sugud, Penampang!

Last stop at Tanjung Aru, the Blue-naped Parrot still around with Asian Palm Swift and also the uncommon Grey Imperial Pigeon feeding together with the Green Imperial Pigeon at one of the fruiting tree.

Birding With Nick & Family

21st December - 2nd January

The trip started around Kota Kinabalu for the locally Endangered Blue-naped Parrot at Tg. Aru Beach including Dollarbird and other garden birds. In the afternoon, went to my local patch for Wandering Whistling Duck, Stork-billed Kingfisher and Oriental Darter.

Despite the weather in the rainforest, we managed to get around 250 birds and 21 mammals with highlights such as Bornean Bristlehead, Storm's Stork and Mt. Serpent Eagle and Orange-breasted Trogon at the usual places, Tambunan Rafflesia Centre, Mt. Kinabalu, Sepilok Forest Reserve, Kinabatangan River and Danum Valley.

My lifer was the Oriental Bay Owl after hearing it for many years!

Mountain Leaf Warbler (Phylloscopus trivirgatus kinabaluensis)

1st May 2013

There are 2 subspecies of Mountain Leaf Warbler found in Sabah and the photos below is the commonest one you will encountered at Mt. Kinabalu and around Crocker Range. The other P. trivirgatus trivirgatus (more yellow) apparently is rare but I have seen at both places for few times. It could be found in bird waves together with Black-capped White Eye, White-throated Fantail, Yellow-breasted Warbler and few more.

Taken with Nikon D300s + 300mm 2.8 VR II + TC1.4x

Very fast moving bird!

Happy birding!
