Thick-billed Spiderhunter

3rd January 2014

Spent few days at Sandakan for bird survey with John and got my 1st lifer for 2014, Far Eastern Curlew at Sim-Sim water village before the rain! Then continued at Rainforest Discovery Centre, Sepilok, the best place in the world now to see the endemic Bornean Bristlehead.

These Thick-billed Spiderhunter were seen feeding at the Bottle Brush flowers next to Keruing Cafe. It even allowed for close up pictures, unlike the other species such as Little or Yellow-eared Spiderhunter. Based on my observations, this is uncommon to rare Spiderhunter in the usual birding hotspots for Sabah

Images taken with Nikon D3s + 300mm 2.8 VR II + TC1.4x

It looked like the smaller version of the rare Long-billed Spiderhunter

Happy birding everyone!
